respectful refresh

DESIGN EDIT ISSUE 38 | DESIGN TOUR

A much-loved family bungalow was treated to a new lease of life with new a kitchen, as well as a refresh of their furniture and furnishings. Kirsten Ford Design worked with these clients to guide the kitchen finish selections and to update their furnishings, being careful to include much-loved family treasures and adding to them special new pieces.

THE BRIEF

The owners had lived in this family home for many years and wanted to update the interiors for a new phase of life. Part of the brief was an updated kitchen that embraced what is important to this couple - the bringing together of friends and family around amazing food and wine. The interior paint colours were updated, new window treatments added, some existing furniture reupholstered for a new lease of life, and new pieces carefully selected.

COLLABORATORS

Krys from Bella Kitchens worked with the clients to create the entertainer’s kitchen of their dreams.  Having worked with Bella previously, we knew they would be able to create a very special and beautiful kitchen and that also scored high on functionality. Bella also offer a complete design to install service for logistical ease and worked in close partnership with us to ensure that finish selections worked with the rest of the home.

INSPIRATION

A lush, tropically landscaped pool area provided the colour inspiration for the interior - leafy green tones balance the original timber floors, offset by crisp white walls.

DESIGN DETAILS

The material palette in the kitchen repeats the glow of the floorboards.  The American Oak timber veneer is balanced by soft white acrylic cabinetry and engineered stone benchtops.

For a family who are passionate about caffeine, the coffee station takes pride of place in the kitchen, not hidden from view - succinctly housing everything needed to make the perfect espresso.

A dining table, beautifully crafted by hand in New Zealand, hosts their friends and family and is lit by a cluster of hand blown glass pendants.  The boldly coloured and patterned rug defines the dining space.

In the family room, vintage pieces have been updated with new upholstery and contrasted with fun lighting.  The main living room sofa was re-upholstered beautiful woven fabric with blue and green tones.

INSIDE EDGE

As well as updating much loved family treasures, we added carefully selected new pieces, favoring handcrafted New Zealand pieces where possible that are contemporary but timeless - and will add to the families collection of much loved treasures.

THE RESULT

This respectful refresh perfectly poises this home for a new chapter, with a special new kitchen very much at the heart of the home.  The updated furniture blends carefully selected new pieces with much-loved family favourites to create a space that is both newly fresh and comfortably connected to it’s past.  And we know the home is ready to create many more special memories for the years to come.
