design edit issue 9

And just like that, 2017 is here! To kick off the new year, I thought I'd offer you my take on what are likely to be some top interiors trends this year. So from maximalist mixed prints, to every shade of green, to artisan craftsmanship, here are my 6 interiors trends for 2017…

1. MAXIMALIST MIXES

Minimalism is making way for maximalism. Interiors have been super clean and edited, and while clean lines will remain, prints and colours will be layered up. This trend was first seen at New York Fashion Week Fall 2016 - and run way fashion usually queues what's to come for home interiors. Patterns will be busy and bright and clashing - and lots of fun.

2. MARBLE EVERYWHERE

Marble has been a huge design trend and it will continue as key finish in kitchens and bathrooms - tiles, splashbacks, bench tops. If you can't bring yourself to buy your own slab of marble, then there will be plenty of beautiful marble accessories for your space.

3. SUPER GREENS

Green is nature's colour - we associate it with growth, harmony and freshness. It's rich, lush and vibrant. All tones of green will trend in a big way - from emerald to chartreuse and everything in between. Green looks great paired with neutrals, with jewel tones and with black. And of course will be centre-stage in foliage inspired prints.

4. TEXTURE, TEXTURE & A BIT MORE TEXTURE

This trend is thought to be driven by our need for an antidote to our flat screens we spend so much time looking at. It's all part of the trend for comfort - a place to rest in our chaotic worlds. Textures like faux fur and mohair will be big trends. And velvet will be huge with it's glamorous edge and subtle texture. And don't be put off - there are many beautiful polyester velvets available that are practical and easy to care for.

5. ARTISANAL RATHER THAN DIY

Driven by Pinterest, The Block and the like, we've been obsessed with DIY, but designers are now looking to items which are more artisan than "quick and easy", like this hand blown glass lamp from SOKTAS. We'll see finishes and items that are special and unique, made with greater craftsmanship.

6. FLORAL DRAMA

Oversized floral prints on wallpaper and fabrics are a trend I love. These aren't grandma's florals - they are large scale, bold and a little bit whimsical. Perfect for a feature wall, cushions, a rug or an ottoman - and perfect for adding a large dash of edgy personality to any space.
